Review:  When picking a movie to watch on Watch Instantly, there are times I choose based solely on the title or cover.  So when I saw a stack of bodies skewered on a giant harpoon, I knew I found my movie for the night.  Yes, coming straight out of Iceland, is a slasher film about a whale watching trip gone wrong.  As if whale watching wasn’t torturous enough, could you imagine being stalked by a family of killers on top of it?  Easily the last thing I’d want to be doing before I went out.  But, for the horror fan, I’d say there are reasons to catch this one: the kills.  They keep the movie fresh, using any items found handy on an old whaling rig you could imagine.  Don’t think it sticks strictly to using harpoons; oh no no.  Certain scenes were a ton of fun to watch, but besides those exceptions expect a lot of the same slasher film formula.  No spectacular performances, story, or dialogue; just a lot of time spent waiting for the next kill.  It was also an interesting choice using the boat as a setting, forcing our characters to be trapped (even though it’s been done before).  The film felt a ton more claustrophobic as an effect, adding to the overall atmosphere of Harpooned in an effective way for the essence “fear.”  But hey, this is a genre piece, so like I always reiterate, if horror films aren’t your thing, Harpooned will do absolutely nothing for you.  If you’re a fellow gore hound though, give this guy a try for something different.  It won’t be the best thing you’ll ever see, but fun non the less at times.  Leave it to Iceland to make whale watching even more horrific than it already is.

Netflix Rating: 3/5

About Matt Donato

I love all things film. I'll watch any genre, any actor, at any time. This whole film critic thing is a passionate hobby for now which I'm balancing with working in the business world, but hey, someday, who knows?
