Day 4: A Film By Your Favorite Director

Wow, I have to pick a favorite director?  That could be even harder than favorite movie. So many directors have their own style and genre they own, so depending on my mood my choice can vary.  Honestly, I have a lot of clichéd favorite directors like Kevin Smith, Martin Scorsese, Danny Boyle; but going by my specific tastes, my favorite director has never missed: Quentin Tarantino.  His style can be traced directly to my taste.  He is a master of pointless dialogue, loves to throw action into his films, and goes out of his way to create totally immersive atmospheres in all of his movies.  Just think of how he put his own twist on World War II with Inglourious Basterds, or how his own take on martial arts (Kill Bill) was in no way a stereotypical high-flying adventure.  But again, to be as clichéd as a cinema fan can be, my movie pick for this director has to be:

Pulp Fiction:

The quintessential movie that breaks so many cinematic rules.  Out of order scenes that jumble the plot around, an ensemble cast that somehow never gets in the way of each other, progressive content, and a movie that comes equip with its very own swagger.    Pulp Fiction is not comparable to any movie.  Go down the list: Jackson, Travolta, Willis, Keitel, Roth, Arquette, Thurman, Rhames…all in one movie.  How good of a script do you have to write in order to lock down every one of those names for what is essentially a supporting role.  Plus, how else would I find out what to call a Big Mac overseas?  It’s impossible to be bored during any scene in this film.  When there’s dialogue, it’s completely intriguing.  When there’s action, its brutal.  What happens in the mean time can be just flat-out weird.  But no one can deny the amount of passion Tarantino puts into a film like this, nailing EVERY single atmospheric nuance.  Tarantino doesn’t create a film, he creates his very own ecosystem where all his characters live and thrive.  Pulp Ficiton is nothing but a shinning example.

So? How about your favorite director and your favorite movie by them?

About Matt Donato

I love all things film. I'll watch any genre, any actor, at any time. This whole film critic thing is a passionate hobby for now which I'm balancing with working in the business world, but hey, someday, who knows?
